The Country Quilter began in 1983, the brainchild of
Claire Oehler. Originally vending at up to 19 quilt shows a year, Claire
quickly realized that she could expand her wares into fabric (and offer
classes) if she stayed in one spot -- so our brick and mortar store opened
in Somers NY in 1990.
In response to a need we saw in the market for
fresh and fun, yet well-written quilt designs, the Country Quilter grew to
include a
publishing
division that has produced over 200 patterns and 11 books since
1994, with more added every year.
Our strong interest in and commitment to the art
quilting community led to the spin-off of
Flourish!, a website devoted to art
quilting, surface design and mixed-media supplies.
In March 2009, Claire and her husband, Richard, retired
and closed the brick and mortar store after nearly 19 years. Their
daughter, Jane, with the shop from day one, took over the Country Quilter
and continues the shop online and at quilt shows around the country.
